Sara: Director of Wildlife Education Services

In this episode, Sara Saylor, Director of Wildlife Education Services at Bridges for Brain Injury, gives us a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to keep Bridges’ beloved alpacas, Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, healthy and happy.

Armed with gentle patience and a sense of humor, Sara walks viewers through how to safely give monthly vaccinations to protect alpacas from meningeal worm, a serious but preventable parasite. Her background in veterinary technology and experience working with exotics at the Seneca Park Zoo shine through as she demonstrates her calm, confident approach.

James: Lead Wildlife Enrichment Coordinator

James brings a lifetime love of wildlife to Bridges. As the organization’s lead Wildlife Enrichment Coordinator, he’s responsible for the animal care and education that make the Wildlife Rockstars program so special.

In this episode of Bridging the Gap, James introduces us to Bubba, the alligator snapping turtle. Bubba is a fascinating apex predator and one of North America’s largest freshwater turtles. Through Bubba’s story, James reminds us how every animal, no matter how tough-looking, plays an important role in the natural world.

James shares that his career path changed after a conversation with a zookeeper inspired him to pursue zoology. That decision eventually led him to Bridges, where he discovered a new purpose: connecting people with brain injuries to wildlife in ways that heal and inspire. “I’d never worked with adults with disabilities before,” he says, “but I knew it would be a great place to work and I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Cathy: Case Manager

While Sara and James focus on animal care, Cathy’s mission is helping people rebuild their lives. As a case manager, she provides critical support to individuals recovering from brain injuries, helping them find housing, access food, and connect with programs that bring hope and stability.

"Someone with a brain injury often doesn’t know where to go or who to turn to,” Cathy explains. “That’s where we step in. We help decrease isolation, depression, and anxiety by giving people an opportunity to socialize, engage, and thrive.”

Her work reflects the mission of Bridges for Brain Injury: restoring independence, connection, and dignity for every participant.

Together, Sara, James, and Cathy provide an inside look into the spectrum of incredible work that Bridges does, from caring for exotic animals to caring for human beings. As the organization prepares to move into a new 25-acre horse farm, their passion and teamwork continue to drive the mission forward.
