Bridging the Gap

Bridging the Gap: The Story of Bridges for Brain Injury (Episode 1)

Every life holds a turning point, an unexpected moment that changes everything. For the millions of Americans living with traumatic brain injuries (TBI), that moment creates a divide: between what was, and what comes next. More than 1.4 million people are hospitalized each year with traumatic brain injuries. But the story doesn’t end with discharge from the hospital. For many, the most difficult part of the journey begins when the medical care ends.

Bridges for Brain Injury was founded to walk beside survivors in those uncertain next steps and to build a pathway forward that is filled with purpose, dignity, and connection. "If it was not for this Bridges for Brain Injuries program, I would be sitting at home all day in this recliner," shares Chris, a member of Bridges for Brain Injury, in a testament to the vital role Bridges for Brain Injury plays in the lives of survivors. Another member, Justin, emphasizes the importance of setting an example for younger generations when asked about working for Bridges and his life's purpose after his injury. As Bridges for Brain Injury Member Julie poignantly states, "I think I’m part of a new team now, thanks to this beautiful lady right here," referring to Bridges for Brain Injury CEO and Co-Founder Laura Donaldson.

A Mission Born from Compassion

Bridges for Brain Injury, a non-profit organization, began after one person identified a gap in care and refused to look away. As a healthcare professional, Laura Donaldson saw too many individuals make real progress during treatment, only to return home without the resources needed to continue healing.

Determined to change that, she co-founded Bridges in 2004 to create a lifeline between recovery and independence.  Laura recalls the initial inspiration: "I was inspired by a wonderful woman that I met. Her son had been injured in a motorcycle accident. The State of New York was not equipped to provide him the specialized care he needed. She said, 'I really want more of a choice for my son and for other people.'" This resonated deeply with Laura's own vision: "How do we do something that meets their needs, provides a sense of purpose for them, and brings them back into their community, living independently?"

What started as small meetings at the Wood Library or the Ramada Inn grew into something real. In 2008, they opened their first office…with no budget, no furniture, and no plan to slow down.

Chris remembers it clearly: “They had no desks, no chairs, nothing.” So they went dumpster diving. “We were jumping in dumpsters looking for office furniture,” Laura laughs, “shoving it in my minivan.” Since then, the organization has grown into a vibrant nonprofit serving hundreds of individuals and families across Western and Central New York.

What We Do: A Bridge to Independent Living, Dignity, and Hope

Through community-based rehabilitation and support groups, Bridges helps adults with brain injuries, physical disabilities, and neurological challenges reclaim their confidence, independence, and connection to the world around them.

Our services are designed to meet individuals wherever they are, whether that’s in one of our regional centers or virtually, from the comfort of one’s home. We focus on:

  • Life skills training
  • Vocational support
  • Therapeutic services
  • Creative and recreational programs
  • Community reintegration

Everything we offer is built on the foundation of person-centered care and empowerment.

Tim reflects, “I was always stuck in a corner. Now I know how to communicate with people. And it teaches other people how to communicate with me.”

Carol adds, “All these people here are amazing. They’re all amazing.”

Wildlife Rockstars: Healing Through Animal Ambassadorship

One of our most unique and powerful programs is Wildlife Rockstars. This team of brain injury survivors not only provides care for non-releasable wildlife, but also travel to schools, libraries, and community events to educate the public on topics including wildlife conservation and surviving traumatic brain injury.

These animals, including owls, hawks, snakes, turtles, and even opossums, have their own stories of survival. As members learn to care for them, they also rediscover their own strength, resilience, and voice. Sam, a program member, shares, “Thanks to the Wildlife Rockstars, I’m not as shy as I used to be, and that makes me proud.”

With animal ambassadors like Compost Malone (a charismatic giant millipede), Ozzy (a commanding Eurasian Eagle Owl), and Ringo (a rare and striking cross fox), the Wildlife Rockstars are a fan favorite across the region. The Seneca Falls Library enthusiastically reported: “We had over 100 people attend. The program was professional, interactive, and such a hit, we rebooked them on the spot!”

After surviving a car accident, Chris lost his sense of direction and struggled to find his voice again. His personal experience is a powerful example of how healing happens through connection. Through the Wildlife Rockstars, he found not only purpose, but the courage to share his journey with others. Today, he teaches children about owls and conservation, proudly representing what recovery can look like. Chris, reflecting on his own journey, powerfully states, “If it wasn’t for the Wildlife Rockstars, I wouldn’t be half the person I am today.”

“I’m a voice for the program,” says Jason. “I was a member. Then I became staff. I love working with animals. That just makes me feel good about myself.”

Bridges Day Programs

Our Outside the Lines day program offers members an outlet for creative expression and emotional healing. Whether it's jewelry making, ceramics, or sewing, these artistic experiences become more than hobbies -- they become tools for rebuilding identity and self-worth.

The Without Walls day program takes members out into the community to enjoy life and build social bonds. From local festivals and parks to bowling and museum visits, these outings foster joy, connection, and active living. CP Rochester shared their appreciation: “Thank you so much, you are all part of a pretty awesome organization!”

Beyond community events, our programs also bring joy to families through Wildlife & Barnyard Birthday Parties. These interactive experiences allow children to meet animals up close and build memories that last a lifetime.

And there’s more to come! Soon, in Summer 2025, Bridges will launch Bridges Barnyard, an interactive petting farm that brings people and animals together in a welcoming, educational space. With alpacas, goats, rabbits, and more, it will serve as a vibrant extension of our mission to foster connection through care.

“Exciting things,” says Karen. “Twenty-five acres with a beautiful pond and barns… and bringing all our members from day program over as well.”

“It’s like a dream come true,” adds Tiffany. “This isn’t just an admin dream. It’s been the members’ dream, too.”

Laura reflects, “I took the leap 16 years ago—and people came to the table and brought others with them. Now we’re taking that leap again. And this time, we’re not doing it alone.”

Guided by Purpose and Integrity

At Bridges, we’re guided by a set of shared values, teamwork, integrity, respect, education, and compassion. Our dedicated staff, volunteers, and board members are united by a commitment to making sure every TBI survivor has the chance to thrive.  Our members often describe Bridges as more than a program; rather, it becomes a second family. A place to feel seen, supported, and celebrated. Kaci, a program member, warmly says, “It’s my home away from home. It’s like having a second family.” Megan’s family members echo this sentiment: “You all do more than just a job, you really care for Megan. We are blessed to be part of the Bridges family.” Another member's family testimonial speaks volumes: “When I visited and saw the care, the love, the energy, tears filled my eyes. My mom goes somewhere she truly enjoys.” Behind every successful program is a team that makes it all possible, focused on one thing: building bridges to independence, dignity, and hope that last.

How You Can Help

Every step forward is powered by the support of our community. Whether you donate, volunteer, or simply share our story, you’re helping someone take the next step toward healing. Laura Donaldson, Co-Founder & CEO, emphasizes, “Every gift, whether it’s time, money, or just spreading the word, helps someone move forward. We can’t do this alone. But together? We can go far.”

Actor Kurt Russell offers his endorsement: "Bridges for Brain Injury is something I really support, and I ask for your support too."

Your support builds bridges. Bridges between trauma and triumph, isolation and connection, and today’s challenges to tomorrow’s dreams.
